The South African government offers the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant to provide financial aid to citizens struggling to meet essential needs.

Originally part of the National State of Disaster, the grant is now governed by the Social Assistance Act 2004. Currently, the SRD Grant provides R370 per month to eligible applicants.

How to Register for SASSA Grants Online

To start, you must register for an account on the SASSA website. Visit SASSA Services and click on the yellow “Register” button.

After agreeing to the terms, provide your details: citizenship, ID type and number, and mobile number.

It’s essential to keep your browser open while waiting for the One-Time Pin (OTP) sent to your phone to complete the registration.

SASSA Grants Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the SRD grant, you must meet specific criteria:

  • Citizenship: You must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or recognized refugee.
  • Age: Applicants should be between 18 and 60 years old.
  • Income: Your monthly earnings must be R624 or less.
  • Other Benefits: You must not receive any other government social grant or contribute to the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).

2. WhatsApp:

  • Send a message with your details.
  • You’ll receive an OTP and a link to complete your application online.

3. Chatbot:

  • Visit the SASSA website and open the chatbot.
  • Choose the SRD R370 Grant option and follow the instructions to apply.

4. GovChat:

  • Access GovChat.
  • Enter your phone number to receive a verification code.
  • Follow the prompts to apply.

Choosing a SASSA Grants Payment Method

Select how you want to receive your payments. You can opt for a bank account or Cash Send.

If choosing a bank account, provide your bank details. For Cash Send, provide your registered mobile number.

Ensure the bank account is in your name, as SASSA cannot transfer funds to accounts not in your name.

SASSA Grants Application Confirmation and Verification

After submitting your application, SASSA will verify your details against government databases, which includes cross-checking your ID, income details, and residency status.
