What is the SASSA Means Test?

As a former beneficiary of SASSA grants, I know the SASSA application process very well. One important step is passing the SASSA Means Test, which determines eligibility for financial assistance.

I’ll share my experience and break down the test’s requirements, income and asset thresholds, and what constitutes “income” and “assets” according to SASSA.

What is the SASSA Means Test?

The SASSA Means Test is a tool the government uses to assess an applicant’s monthly income and total assets.

This test ensures that financial assistance reaches those who need it most.

As someone who has gone through the process, I can attest to its significance in determining eligibility.

Requirements to Pass the Means Test

Applicants must meet specific income and asset thresholds to qualify for any SASSA grant.

These thresholds change every six months, so it’s essential to stay updated.

For instance, the yearly income threshold for the SRD R350 grant is a maximum monthly income of R624 per month for both single and married applicants.

Income Thresholds

The income thresholds vary depending on the grant type. For example:

  • Child Support: R61 200 per year (single), R122 400 per year (married)
  • Disability: R97 320 per year (single), R194 640 per year (married)

Asset Limit Thresholds

Asset limits apply to specific grants, such as the Disability, Older Persons, Grant-in-Aid, and War Veterans grants. For instance:

  • War Veterans: R1 379 400 (single), R2 758 800 (married)

What Constitutes “Assets” and “Income”?

The SASSA Means Test considers the value of your property, loans, bonds, and money in your bank account as assets.

Income includes salary, wages, pensions, rental properties, investments, and grants.

Grant Payment Amounts

Knowing the grant payment amounts can help you plan your finances. For example:

  • Old Age grant: R2 080 (below 75 years), R2 100 (above 75 years)
  • Disability grant: R2 080

Passing the SASSA Means Test is essential to unlocking financial assistance.

Remember to report your income accurately to ensure a smooth assessment process.
